Calculating an individual's carbon emissions is not an exact science and we certainly don't make any claims that this calculator (like most others) is capable of making precise determinations. Rather, carbon calculators provide a way of determining the approximate amount of carbon your particular activities create.
- Home Emissions: To calculate your Estimated Home Emissions, we add the amount of emissions resulting from electricity and natural gas usage, based on Idaho's average consumption, for your residence type and size.
- Auto Emissions: To calculate your Estimated Auto Emissions, we divide the number of miles that you indicated you drive in a year, by the estimated fuel efficiency (mpg) of the vehicle(s) type you selected.
- Air Travel Emissions: To calculate your Estimated Air Travel emissions, we multiply the estimated number of hours you fly in a year by 414, (which is the average number of miles flown per hour of air travel). That figure is then multiplied by 1.4, (which is the total climate impact of one air-passenger mile, expressed in pounds of carbon dioxide). That result is then divided by 2,205, which is the number of pounds in a metric ton.
