Filigreen, Flowers With A Twist - Pioneering Sustainable Floristry

Filigreen pays as much attention to where flowers come from and how they are grown as to the floral designs themselves. We work with local farmers and closest-to-home growers who practice sustainable floriculture. We use USDA-compliant solutions to hydrate and extend the life of our flowers. And by reusing, recycling, and composting our green waste, we keep our prices competitive.

Provide natural light and convert incandescent bulbs to fluorescent
Provide heating and cooling with Energy Star qualified unit
Provide hot water source with an on-demand hot water heater
Research cost-effective method of capturing solar energy to power electric use
Research cost-effective method of venting refrigeration unit to outside

Accomplishments to Date:
Energy-efficient lighting, temperature control, and water heating complete

Use the water necessary to transport locally grown flowers to irrigate surrounding landscaping
Research cost-effective water recapture system

Waste Management Goals:
Reduce cellophane and cardboard consumption by harvesting locally-grown product transported in water buckets
Recycle cardboard, paper and plastic
Composte pesticide-free green waste
Source 50% of floral containers from those made locally and/or of recycled materials

Eliminated cellophane and cardboard use during months of May through September
Identified two local sources for containers made of glass diverted from landfill, and one source for containers made of recycled and recyclable materials

Transportation Goals:
Limit deliveries and pick ups to two times daily
Reduce impact of miles travelled with local carbon offset program

Provide homebound seniors participating in Meals on Wheels with holiday season flowers by way of grant support

Provided 43 homebound seniors living in the North End with holiday season flowers with grant assistance from the North End Neighborhood Association
