Sparkee started as a 1994 Toyota Tercel with a blown gasoline engine. But the guys at West Side EV saw the potential as an electric car, due to the Tercel’s low curb weight and compact body style. Follow the picture story to see the transition from a gas car, to a great electric town car.
The car was originally purchased for $200 with a terrible engine knock and was able to limp itself to the shop to have the fuel tank, exhaust, and damaged motor removed (all of which were recycled).
We chose the Tercel platform for its simplicity, used part availability, and overall design as the donor for the conversion.
Immediately, engine mounts were designed and fabricated to cradle the 40 hp D&D Motor System electric motor.
The next step was to build battery trays to hold 12, 6 volt Discover batteries for a grand total of 72 volts.
The Discover batteries are classified as non-hazardous, recyclable and are an advanced Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) design.
And finally the tedious task of wiring the systems together was performed.
A few touches here and there, new carpet, power brakes, and solar powered ventilation fans were added to the hood, and the car was ready for the road.
With a top speed of 45-50 mph and a range of about 40-60 miles on a single charge, it makes for a perfect commuter car.
The car is now owned by the Executive Director of GreenWorks Idaho and his wife, the Program Director for the Idaho Green Expo. We believe in this business so much that we bought their first car! We’d like to help make Boise a hub of electric car conversions.
